Continuing with the theme initiated in 2010 for commemorative 2-euro coins, intended to commemorate properties and places included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, the FNMT-RCM issues the ninth coin in this series, dedicated on this occasion to the Old Town of Santiago de Compostela.
Santiago de Compostela was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985, considering that in addition to its urban beauty and monumental integrity, its spiritual significance as an apostolic sanctuary and the destination of the most important religious and cultural movement of the Middle Ages, the pilgrimage along the Way of St. James, was also deeply felt.
The coin, minted in proof quality, is presented in an elegant numbered case that protects the coin and, at the same time, allows both sides of the coin to be perfectly visible. The obverse of the coin depicts the image of St. James the Pilgrim, which is located in the central arch of the Holy Door in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
